Roger Raveel (1921-2013), one of the most important post-war painters, was born 100 years ago in the East-Flemish village of Machelen-aan-de-Leie and lived there all his life. It is there that documentary makers Pieter Verbiest and Bertrand Lafontaine went out with the camera in search of witnesses who knew the painter well. We hear testimonials from poet Roland Jooris, Raveel’s right-hand man, Luc Levreau, Raveel’s collaborator for years, and widow Marleen De Muer. In the VRT documentary, art historian Franz Wilhelm Kaiser situates Roger Raveel’s work internationally.

Retrospective in Bozar
Raveel’s birth centenary is also celebrated by museum Bozar (Paleis voor Schone Kunsten) in Brussels, with a large retrospective exhibition, curated by the aforementioned Franz Wilhelm Kaiser. This will run until July 21, 2021, and is an absolute must-see. Please note that tickets for the exhibition must be reserved in advance.
