Two drawings by Lucebert

New arrivals at Olla Art: two beautiful ink drawings by Lucebert from his best period (around 1960). Both drawings are the same size as the writing pads (27 x 21 cm) that Lucebert used for his impressive drawing production. “As if the possibility always had to be available to move from drawing to writing and vice versa,” Ad Petersen says in ‘Lucebert in het Stedelijk’ (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 1987).

Lucebert, zonder titel, 1957 en 1962
Lucebert, untitled, respectively dated 1957 en 1962
Ink on paper, 26.8 x 21 and 27 x 21 cm

Giraffe
The drawing from 1957 is one of the top of Lucebert’s work. The drawing shows a wacky giraffe-like creature on very high legs, which seems to be trained by a human figure with an extendable arm. The exact meaning of the scene is unclear to us – it may refer to a fairy tale or fable.

Elongated lady
The other drawing, from 1962, shows a more sober image: a two-headed male confronted by an elongated lady (a kind of female pierlala) hanging in or over a tree. Again, the meaning or story behind the scene is unknown to us.
The drawing shows the name of the place where the drawing was made: in Vellereux, in the Belgian province of Luxembourg, where Lucebert often stayed.

Condition
Both drawings are in excellent condition. The drawing from 1962 has slight traces of discolouration, due to an earlier framing. Both drawings are professionally framed in a maple frame and fitted with museum glass.
