Twice Karel Appel

Olla Art recently acquired two powerful graphic works by Karel Appel that serve as models for work from the early 1960s and 1970s.

Three heads
‘Three heads’ is an undated lithograph, which must have been made around 1960. In this lithograph, which shows three heads against a blue and ochre background, the expressive style of the late fifties and early sixties is clearly recognizable. The use of colour, with blue, ochre, red and black, is also more common in the Karel Appel from this period. The work has a fairly large format and was printed in a limited edition of 80.
The lithograph was part of the corporate collection of Deloitte Nederland. It is in good condition and framed in a gold-coloured frame. This is of course replaceable.

Blue faced beast
In the screenprint ‘Blue faced beast’, we see a very different Appel, in his characteristic style of the seventies. Typical are the plain, multicoloured surfaces from which the image is constructed and the heavy contour lines that have been applied. In this period, Appel generally uses the screenprinting technique instead of lithography.
The size of this work is impressively large. It is beautifully and professionally framed and shows the entire sheet. One hundred copies of this screenprint have been printed, plus a few copies for employees (‘hors commerce’). The piece on offer is such an ‘hc’.
