New in the Olla Art collection are ‘Kop met vierkant’ (Head with square), a woodcut by Roger Raveel from 1983, and ‘De schepping van de vrouw (i)’ (The creation of woman), an etching from 1997.
Rare
The woodcut was made in a small edition, and is therefore rare: 15 copies on Japanese paper and 15 copies on rag paper – the copy on offer is one of the 15 copies printed on rag paper. The woodcut is described and illustrated as number 139 in the three-part work catalogue, compiled by Octave Scheire (Scheire, 2013, p. 119).
The work was printed by Piet Clement’s Printshop, which was located on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam at the time. Clement also printed a version with a red square (no. 140 in Scheire’s work catalogue).
Creation of woman
Of a later date is ‘De schepping van de vrouw (i)’ (The creation of woman), an etching by Raveel, published in 1997. The etching depicts the painter actually creating a woman figure.
The etching was made in an edition of 100. In addition, 25 Roman numbered copies were printed and 26 alphabetically lettered copies, plus some artist’s proofs and copies ‘hors commerce’. For printing, Raveel looked closer to home: this was done by Henrie Hemelsoet’s printing studio De Zachte Klaarte in Sint-Amandsberg (Ghent).
In Scheire’s work catalogue, the work is described as number 221 (Scheire, 2013, p. 177).
A colour version of the etching was published five years later: ‘De schepping van de vrouw (ii)’ (2002). It is included in the work catalogue as number 244 (Scheire, 2013, p. 195).
Information
The woodcut (‘Kop met vierkant’) is in excellent condition and professionally framed in a blank wooden frame. The etching (‘De schepping van de vrouw’) is still unframed and also in very good condition, except for a small wrinkle in the top margin. If desired, we can provide suitable framing.
The price of ‘Kop met vierkant’ is 975 euros. ‘De schepping van de vrouw’ costs ten euros more.
More work by Raveel and a short biography of the artist can be found here.
In December 2020 we published a newsletter about Raveel’s work, entitled The empty planes of Roger Raveel.
