Olla Art has a new etching by Marino Marini in its collection, entitled Trio felice, depicting a ‘happy threesome’: horse, rider and bystander.
Marini created the etching in 1970, together with the Milanese printer Luigi de Tullio. De Tullio published the etching in 1972, as part of ‘Marino Marini Opera Grafica’, a portfolio with twenty etchings. In that portfolio, ‘Trio felice’ forms plate XVII.
Magnani
The etching is printed on Magnani, from the Italian paper factory of the same name, which established its first paper mill on the banks of the Pescia in 1404. The etching is described as number 237 in the catalogue of the graphic work of Marino Marini compiled by Giorgio and Guido Guastalla (Guastalla & Guastalla, 1991), and can be found in an earlier edition of this catalogue as A119. The main edition of the etching consisted of 60 Arabic numbered copies. In addition, twenty Roman numbered copies were printed and five copies ‘hors commerce’ (for employees), lettered A to E. The etching offered is numbered ‘VIII/XX’, copy No. 8 of 20, and signed by Marini.
Nuovo Sagittario
The previous owner was a collector from Monza (near Milan), who bought the etching at Galleria Nuovo Sagittario, a Milanese gallery that opened in 1974 and has now closed its doors.
The work is still in its original frame. The original glass, however, has been replaced by museum glass.
