Klaas Gubbels – Calvinist?

Klaas Gubbels’ iconic coffee pots, tables and chairs are displayed in the Arco Pavilion of Museum Villa Mondriaan in Winterswijk (Netherlands).

The subjects of Gubbels’ artworks may seem ordinary and everyday, but that is exactly what inspires him. Depicting ‘the ordinary’ and repeating simple forms allow him to focus on the painting itself, and not get lost in the subject.

Reformed?
Gubbels calls the paintings on display in the museum ‘Reformed paintings’. As he describes it himself: work that shows that a lot of thought has gone into it. They are paintings that reflect the lengthy process behind the apparently simple and repetitive works of art. Gubbels has a ‘viewing room’ in his studio especially for these paintings. Once he has made a painting, he puts it there and looks at it until he knows what yet needs to be done about it.
