In Kunstmuseum Den Haag the exhibition ‘Lucassen – The happy painter’ runs until October 11, 2020.
Reinier Lucassen (b. 1939) can be classified under the ‘new figuratives’, a movement which includes Alphons Freymuth and the Belgian painters Etienne Elias, Yvan Theys, Raoul De Keyser and Roger Raveel as best known representative. The paintings of this group show influences from pop art.
About the ‘Romantic landscape with palm tree’ the Kunstmuseum says: ‘A romantic landscape in art history is usually a source of melancholy and imagination. […] Lucassen gives the concept a completely different twist. He paints a flat representation of a palm tree, mountains, a setting sun and uses a fragment à la Mondrian for a strongly ironizing effect. ‘Romantic landscape with palm tree’ is all about Lucassen: unruly, uncompromising and tantalizing.’
