Etching and lithograph by Asger Jorn

The Olla Art collection was recently enriched with two new works by Asger Jorn: an etching and a lithograph. Both works date from 1958.

The etching served as one of the eight illustrations for the short (only 44 pages!) novel Friedhof der Maulwürfe (talpa europea) oder geländegänge in tagesläufen by C. Caspari. The title page indicates that the publication is the first part of a cycle, but a sequel has never been published.
The author of this ‘Mole Cemetery’, Arthus Carlheinz Caspari, was a German writer and director (1921-2009).

Colour proof
The novel was published in 1959 by Galerie van de Loo in Munich in an edition of 200 copies, with an unsigned suite of the etchings. In addition, 30 copies appeared with a signed suite.
According to the revised edition of the catalogue of Jorn’s graphic work (Presler, 2009), the etchings were printed by F. Bruckmann KG, also in Munich. The original edition of the work catalogue (Weihrauch, 1976) lists Graf-Presse as the printer. The entire suite is described and depicted as nos. 212 to 219 in the work catalogue.
Jorn made a few colour proofs of one of the etchings (no. 215). One of these proofs, which rarely if ever come to the market, is now offered by Olla Art.

Dead spot
Olla Art recently acquired another work by Jorn from 1958: the lithograph ‘Dead spot’. The lithograph was printed by Permild & Rosengreen in Copenhagen, in an edition of 30 copies. In addition, some proofs were printed.
It is an expressive work, typical of Jorn’s style from around 1960, in which the primary colours red, yellow and blue are leading.
‘Dead spot’ is included as number 196 in Van de Loo’s work catalogue (Weihrauch, 1976; Presler, 2009).
