Olla Art offers a new work by the Italian artist Enrico Baj: ‘La robe bleue’, an etching with aquatint and collage, printed on brocade.
The work dates from 1970, is hand-signed by Baj and printed in an edition of fifty.
Petit
The work is included as no. 300 in the catalogue of Baj’s graphic work, compiled by Jean Petit (Petit, 1973). In Petit we can read that the etching was published by Berggruen in Paris in collaboration with Galerie Pierre in Stockholm. Giorgio Upiglio in Milan was the printer. In addition to the main edition of fifty, ten more ‘épreuves d’artiste’ (artist’s proofs) were printed.
Our copy comes from Galerie Delta in Rotterdam, founded in 1962, now closed. It is classically framed.
Blue dress
‘La robe bleue’ is a well-known motif in painting. Think of the women in blue dresses by James McNeill Whistler (1871), Philip Wilson Steer (1892), Frederick Carl Frieseke (1917) and Amedeo Modigliani (1919). Or is Baj referring here to the blue dress that sculptor Camille Claudel wore during her brother Paul’s last visit? Those who know, let them speak.
Small and large
In addition to this smaller work by Baj, Olla Art also offers a work by Baj in a sturdy format: Ermengarda. For information about both works: email us via info@olla-art-com.
A short biography on Baj can be found here.
