Our collection of works by Jürgen Partenheimer has been expanded with ‘De Amsterdamse drukken I’ from 1988. A rare set of six etchings printed on large sheets with aquatint, one of which has been heightened with pencil.
The designation with a Roman I indicates a sequel, but that never happened. The designation ‘Amsterdamse’ also seems questionable, since the printer (Wolfgang Wassmann) was located in Cologne and the publisher (Galerie Heike Curtze) in Düsseldorf and Vienna. The colophon offers an explanation: the plates were processed and etched and proof-printed in Amsterdam. Apparently the plates then moved to Cologne, where the final edition was printed in Wassmann’s studio.
Limited edition
Incidentally, this final edition was very limited: twenty ‘regular’ copies and an additional five Roman-numbered copies.
Please note: in the ‘Werkverzeichnis’ (www.jurgenpartenheimer.com), where the edition is referred to as number WZ 88/39, and in various other sources (such as Linsmann & Partenheimer, 2004) an edition size of 15 is wrongly mentioned.

The etchings were printed on handmade paper (BFK Rives) and Partenheimer signed each copy on both the front and reverse. The etchings are delivered complete, in their original half-linen portfolio folder. A letter from the publisher to the first owner is included.
